5 years ago, we welcomed Scott Barrowcliffe to our Operations and HR department, back when Sort Group consisted of just our Derby and Cardiff offices. Since then, the Group has expanded to multiple offices across the country, now employing more than 120 staff members. It’s safe to say it’s been a monumental journey—and one that wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of our people, especially Scott.
Now as our Group Operations Manager, Scott has played a key role in strengthening our teams and culture across all branches, ensuring our people have what they need to succeed in their roles.
We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Scott’s 5 year anniversary— an incredible milestone that reflects his dedication, leadership, and commitment to Sort Group.
Now, let’s look back on Scott’s journey and hear more from him in his FAQs below...
Over the past five years, how have you seen Sort Group evolve as a business and as a workplace?
These past five years, I’ve seen Sort grow a lot as a business. The business has always been fast-moving, highly driven and ambitious; it’s been great to be part of this evolution. I think our culture has been the biggest change as there’s been a huge focus on development and support for our employees. It’s been rewarding to see the company’s growth, culture expand and watching team members grow in their own career journeys.
What motivated you to take on your current role, and how has that journey shaped you?
I was motivated by the opportunity to contribute more broadly to the organisation and influence its long‑term direction. Stepping into my current role enabled me to move beyond day‑to‑day operational responsibilities and focus on strategy, people development, and sustainable improvement. The journey has pushed me outside my comfort zone, but the role is incredibly rewarding.
What initiatives or projects are you most proud of leading during your time here at Sort?
I’m particularly proud of the operational enhancements we’ve made, especially around the offices and helping to make things run more smoothly and consistently. It’s great to see these changes have made a difference for employees, and watching individuals grow in confidence and capability is something I value immensely.
What’s one thing you’ve learned about leadership that you didn’t expect when you became a Manager?
One thing I have learnt is that effective leadership isn’t defined by having all the answers all the time. Listening, supporting people and trusting your team to do their roles is what it’s all about. I would say being approachable goes a long way.
Can you share a moment when you felt you really made a difference in the company’s culture or operations?
There have been several occasions where the changes we’ve introduced have had a clear and positive impact on people’s work. I’d say it’s mainly when people say their day-to-day work felt easier. This to me highlights that we’ve done our jobs effectively and that we are genuinely making a difference to both our culture and our operations.
How do you continue to challenge yourself and grow in your role as Group Operations Manager?
I continue to challenge myself by staying open to feedback and looking for new ways to improve. I’m also making the effort to step outside my comfort zone, take on new responsibilities, and regularly reflect on what’s working well and where improvements can be made. For me, growth is driven by curiosity, self‑awareness, and a willingness to keep moving forward.
