This month, we celebrate our Senior Remortgage Paralegal, Catherine Alexander’s 5-year anniversary with Sort Legal. Reaching this 5-year milestone reflects both her professional and personal journey as she has navigated personal challenges, adapted to role changes and continuously developed her legal expertise, all while supporting clients and her team.
Starting in the Transactional department as Conveyancing Team Leader, Catherine has since grown into a key figure within the Remortgage Department, managing the team and developing her own skills.
In this blog, Catherine shares personal insights into her time at Sort Legal, from overcoming challenges to proudest moments…
What does reaching 5 years at Sort Legal mean to you?
It’s a significant milestone reaching 5 years at Sort Legal, as there have been challenges in my personal life during my employment here. Sort Legal has supported me throughout and adapted my role on numerous occasions to help me use my legal knowledge and experience to its best potential for both me and them.
How has your role evolved since you first joined?
On joining Sort Legal, I was employed in the transactional department as a Conveyancing Team Leader to help expand the already thriving transactional team. Following my return from maternity leave, I returned to the transactional team on a case handler basis, which proved challenging for me on a part-time basis. An opportunity arose to move to the Remortgage Department to help with the management of the team, and I have been there and developed my role within the team for the last 2 years.
What have been some of your proudest moments/achievements over the past 5 years?
Customer service is important to all aspects of the conveyancing job, whether it being as a case handler and dealing with clients daily or in my current role where I get involved if there is some sort of problem. I always feel proud knowing that I have been able to satisfy a client or calm a situation and that the client feels like they have been given a good service.
What part of your role has challenged you the most?
Learning new skills to adapt to the requirements of my new role in the remortgage team.
If you could sum up your Sort Legal journey in 3 words, what would they be?
· Unexpected – I am not in the role that I thought I would be in when I started.
· Happy – I really enjoy the role that I am in and the path that I have taken to get here
· In-progress – Sort Legal and the remortgage team is continually developing and so I expect my role to develop further in the future.
What does success look like to you now, compared to 5 years ago?
In the ability to adapt to new circumstances and in the understanding that even if things turn out differently from how you expected, it’s not always a negative and can be a success in itself.
What’s one piece of career advice you would give to your younger self?
Be patient and persevere. I started my Cilex training in 2009, and personal circumstances have prevented me from fully qualifying until now – I am currently in the process of completing my qualification and hope to become a Fellow in the foreseeable future.
