The Sort Legal team has expanded, and we have recently taken on several new staff members, including apprentices, remortgage assistants, and admin assistants. Muhammed is one of our newest members of the team and has settled in well.
This week we took some time to get to know Muhammed. We asked him about his personal life, inspirations, and experience. Muhammed has an exciting journey. Read on to learn more!
Could you describe your role to us? What are your daily tasks as a Remortgage Assistant?
My daily tasks vary day to day depending on how close we are to completing a file. Still, you can usually find me carrying out such tasks as sending out mortgage reports and mortgage deeds to clients, doing accounts packs, and liaising with brokers/lenders.
What made you want to join the Sort Legal team?
I joined Sort Legal because my ambition after university was to pursue a career in conveyancing. However, the cherry on top was when I found myself in a firm where people can develop and grow at their own pace. Sort Legal offers many progression opportunities and always provide support when needed.
What did you do before Sort Legal? Tell us about your previous experience?
Before Sort Legal, I have had a few retail roles, but my most recent role was working at Firstsource near Pride Park Stadium as an Outbound Customer Experience Advisor for Sky. This entailed calling up existing customers who had cancelled their Sky package to try and convince them to re-join Sky with new offers and discounts. I was there for 5 months.
During this role, I worked towards targets. I developed a confident, professional telephone manner whilst working under pressure, speaking to existing or previously existing Sky customers in a busy environment to win them back with offers and discounts. I quickly grasped new information and systems and actively followed data protection and customer care procedures.
I have also had legal work experience at Geldards LLP, Freeths LLP, Edward Hands and Lewis, and The Johnson Partnership. I built on the theoretical skills I learnt during my legal studies whilst also using practical skills on live cases under the supervision of senior legal professionals. The practice areas I gained experience in were Corporate Law, Property Law, Employment Law, and Criminal Law.
I did some of the things include drafting client emails, analysing the strengths and weaknesses, carrying out legal research, and developing a practical understanding of conveyancing procedures.
How would you like to progress at Sort Legal?
My ambition is to eventually move on to doing transactional work at the firm and then become a licensed conveyancer.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you?
Battle rap is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine!
What’s your favourite way to spend a day off?
I like to go out with my wife, research things and keep up to date with the news. I may also enjoy a good film or series.
How would you describe working at Sort Legal?
Working at Sort Legal is satisfying because the people are helpful and supportive, and the training is explained and demonstrated in an easily understandable and practical way. This makes the work I usually do quite straightforward, except for when we get the usual few hiccups along the way!
Also, liaising with clients, lenders, and other organisations makes me feel like I am contributing to each file in a meaningful way that the case handlers are working on.
Who inspires you?
I have been inspired by many figures throughout history from a wide variety of backgrounds for various reasons, such as bravery, humility, intelligence, leadership skills, humanity, and belief in justice (although not necessarily all in one person!)
These figures include Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Jesus, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Tupac Shakur, al-Ghazali, Niccolò Machiavelli, Voltaire, Leo Tolstoy and many more! Too many to list here.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s a difficult question to answer.
If you could go on holiday anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
The Maldives because it looks fantastic (and my wife dreams of going there!)
What would you say to someone looking to start a career in conveyancing at Sort Legal?
I would say two things:
If you ever need support with anything, ask because everyone is always ready to help.
Double and triple check everything!
