Join us in celebrating a special milestone for our Chief Information Officer, Matt Ewers, who has helped shape Sort Group’s technology and supported our growth for the past five years. Since joining as Group IT Manager in 2021, his role has since evolved into CIO, moving from hands-on technical work to leading the strategy that keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes while helping Sort Group grow.
With the development of technology, Matt has overseen big changes within the Group, from moving the team to a cloud-based IT model to supporting the expansion of our offices. He has also taken on new challenges by mentoring the Group’s first IT apprentice, supporting new talent and helping them kickstart their career in the IT world.
In this blog, Matt shares his experience over the past five years…
Over the past 5 years, how has your role at Sort Group evolved, and what have been the key milestones along the way?
When I joined as Group IT Manager back in 2021, my role was initially a balance between leadership and hands-on technical work. Since then, my role has evolved into CIO, which has been a significant personal and professional milestone. I’ve moved from managing the day-to-day infrastructure to overseeing its continued success from a more strategic level, adding a focus on the long-term technological vision for the Group. Expanding beyond the two offices we had when I joined has been particularly pleasing, and contributing to that ongoing growth is a daily highlight.
What first attracted you to join Sort Group, and how has your journey shaped your experience as CIO?
What first attracted me was the Group’s ambition and the honesty of the initial interview. Having often worked in roles where I held sole responsibility for the entire IT function, I was looking for an environment where I could be part of a wider, collaborative team while still making a significant impact. My journey to CIO has reinforced that technology is the ultimate enabler; it’s taught me the importance of providing the security and scalability that allows the rest of the business to be ambitious, knowing the infrastructure is robust enough to support that growth.
How has IT developed within the Group over the past 5 years, and what changes have had the biggest impact?
There have been so many developments as we’ve grown as a team and a Group. However, I think the transition from a mix of on-premise and hosted hardware to a more agile IaaS and Cloud-based model has had the biggest impact. It has been the fundamental shift that has allowed us to facilitate the rapid growth of the Group, ensuring our systems are as flexible as the business needs them to be.
Looking back, what achievements during your time here are you most proud of, and why?
The transition to CIO was obviously a very proud personal moment, but I’m equally proud of the culture and team we’ve built. When I joined, I wanted to bring my experience from various industries to solve problems here; applying that 'cross-industry' logic to improve our stability has been very rewarding. I’m also particularly proud of launching our IT apprenticeship scheme, which saw its first successful completion just before Christmas. It’s the start of something that focuses on developing fresh talent from the ground up and giving people a real start in the industry.
Have there been any challenges you’ve faced that have shaped the way you work/approach the role?
The biggest challenge was the transition from 'doing' to 'leading'. In my earlier years, I was used to being the person who fixed every problem myself. As CIO, I’ve had to learn to step back and trust the team I’ve built, focusing more on empowerment and strategy. However, the office expansions we've had during my time here have been the moments where I’ve really enjoyed getting back to basics. Whether it’s commissioning a new site or physically setting up a new space, it’s been important to me that I can still muck in and get the job done alongside the team when it counts.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Sort Group team?
I still enjoy the fact that I’m part of a wider, collaborative tech team; five years on, that hasn't changed. However, as the Group has grown, we’ve also grown into a collaborative Senior Leadership Team, so if we have an idea that improves the business, we can execute it quickly. It’s a very supportive environment where you can still bounce ideas off people, which is exactly what I was looking for when I first signed up, plus as my own role evolves, I’m becoming more of that person to bounce ideas off too.
Looking ahead, are there any projects/goals you’re looking forward to in the coming years?
As the industry continues to change and the Group continues to grow and diversify, it’s hard to pinpoint one specific thing. It’s usually the next idea that comes out of nowhere that provides the most excitement. I'm looking forward to the continuous evolution of our systems and seeing how we can implement the next "big thing" to keep us ahead of the competition.
