Meet Hayley Brown: Building Sort Legal's Wills, Trusts and Probate department

As Sort Legal’s new Wills, Trusts, and Probate department continues to grow, we’re introducing another key member of the team helping bring the service to life. Hayley Brown, Private Client Paralegal, works alongside Lisa Caine, Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate, and having worked together previously, they bring an established working relationship and shared commitment to delivering expert client service.
Working closely with clients, Hayley plays an important role in supporting the department, helping to ensure matters progress smoothly from start to finish while providing reassurance and guidance throughout the process.
We asked Hayley a few questions to get to know her better and find out more about her role, her career so far, and what she’s most excited about as the department continues to grow.
What drew you to a career in private client work, specifically Wills, Trusts, and Probate?
I was drawn to Private Client work because it’s very people-focused. You’re helping individuals and families with really important decisions, and I like being able to support clients through what can sometimes be difficult or emotional situations.
How did this lead you to join Sort Legal, and what excites you most about your role?
I wanted to join a firm with a strong client focus, which is what stood out to me about Sort Legal. We’ve been given the opportunity to build the Private Client department from scratch, which is really exciting, and to help shape how it develops as it grows.
What does a typical day look like for you as a Private Client Paralegal?
No two days are ever quite the same, which I really enjoy. I take a hands-on role in supporting the Head of Department, drafting Wills and Powers of Attorney, managing files, liaising directly with clients and third parties and assisting with the smooth progression of estate administration matters. It’s a varied role where I’m trusted to stay on top of things and keep matters moving efficiently.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, no matter how small they seem. It’s the best way to learn (and avoids a lot of unnecessary Googling).
What’s one skill you’ve always wanted to learn (legal or otherwise)?
I’d like to keep developing my communication skills, but I’d also love the skill of always knowing what to cook for tea without having to think about it!
Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time or unwind after a busy day?
Most of my time outside of work is spent with my partner, son and daughter, which definitely keeps me busy. When I do get a bit of time to myself, I like to unwind by watching a good series, getting stuck into a book or socialising with my friends.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
I’d love to travel more with my partner, son and daughter and experience new places together, it’s something I’m really looking forward to in the near future.
Do you have a favourite film/TV show? The TV series Outlander is one of my favourites. I love the storyline and the characters and I’m a bit of a history buff, so it really appeals to me. I’ve also enjoyed reading the books, so it’s been nice following the story in both ways.
If you could see any artist/band, dead or alive, who would it be?
It would have to be Queen! I don’t think anything could beat that atmosphere. Although if Henry Cavill counts, I might have to reconsider, haha.
What advice would you give to someone starting a career in Wills, Trusts, and Probate?
Get as much hands-on experience as you can, pay attention to the small details and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It also really helps being thrown in at the deep end, so don’t panic, you’ll learn very quickly by getting stuck in. Above all, be approachable and understanding, as you’re often supporting clients during some of the most difficult and important moments in their lives.
